This large and impressive vase was carved in Italy (circa late 1800's) from a cream, lightly-veined alabaster. The vase is a highly stylised pouring vessel with an ovoid body, elongated neck and single handle. The vase features the form of an intricately-carved, grotesque dragon head with a wide, open mouth typical of the period. The handle is a combination of highly decorative grapes, vine leaves, stylised foliage and a bird at the lower collar. Below, the body of the vase depicts exquisite floral carving. The vase’s body stands atop a scroll with a circular and hexagonal stepped base. Created by a highly skilled artisan this piece is dark cream in colour.
Incredibly unique and rare piece for the astute collector. Condition: Some very minor scratches throughout consistent with age.
